ZAZEN & BLANKETS 98662

Last night the PoC and ZMH joined me for evening office, I woke at 0410 for morning office feeding the cat and letting him out. Ate some more nato before waking ZMH and the PoC. ZMH woke the wife and she sat for a few minuets. I made preparations this time by suggesting the kids grab blankets to sit with before sitting, but ZMH got a small thin shawl that she complained abot not being warm enough so I gave her my towelket that serves as my make shift kesa which seemed to satisfy. I was quite impressed by the PoC's ability to sit still. She might get a name change to ZMI if she keeps up.
I have been thinking a bit about sewing my own Kesa. Inspired largely by this guys efforts. I am not exactly sure of the measurements but I am pretty sure I can figure out what to do from this guy's Blog.
I really appreciate sitting with the family in the mornings. Since the kids have started sitting there has seemed to be increasing increments of equanimity in the house. No, not everything is perfect, girls will be girls, but I believe it is getting better all the time.

ZAZEN & KAPOK 98662
Late last evening my Kapok Zafu and 10lbs of Kapok filling arrived. I emptied out the two oldest Buckwheat filled Zafus and gave them a needed washing. I then proceded to stuff them with kapok. If you are ever inclined to undertake such an operation I would like to warn you that this is a messy process. Particularly with ZMH and the PoC trying to help. Kapok fluff ended up a lot of places other than inside the Zafu covers. After a period of time I did manage to get enough kapok stuffed into the Zafu covers to be adequate for the little ones to sit on. I think I have enough kapok to fill two ore three more Zafu’s and I know I have seen patterns for them. I am thinking I will make some more. Can you ever have enough Zafus? I tried out the new one that was sent and I noticed that it does seem to have the benefit of not constricting the blood flow to my left leg as much when sitting full lotus.
I was on a day of leave yesterday so I decided to not bother coming to work this morning at the usual time but instead come in at the “Prescribed” time. Still I only managed one sitting after morning office but I did get good nights sleep. The Wife and the PoC were invited to sit but again only ZMH joined me. The timer got hung up though and we ended up sitting for 45 minutes. ZMH wanted to know how long and I obliged her by checking, as soon as I opened the application the bell went off.
It is kind of weird because normally my internal clock knows approximately when the bell should go off. Maybe I successfully let go of that, I don’t know.
Breakfast of cereal, hygiene and some genmai~cha to go. Hugs from ZMH and gratitude to her for sitting with me.
Now I am at work, reservists coming this weekend and a Commanding Generals Inspection. Joy!

ZAZEN REPORT 98662
When I went to the living room for the first sitting and found it was a mess so I conducted a furious clean up effort before morning office.
I noted I had a hard time settling down.
Had a nice breakfast of nato (fermented soybeans) and rice and some tea.
I went to ZMH’s room to ask her if she wanted to sit but left quickly and she started crying “Daddy I want to sit with you” from her bed; I had already left for the living room.
This woke up her mother and they both came to the hall together.
Second sitting I was able to settle down despite the wife’s squirming, coughing, and clockwatching on the zafu.
I tried to give her some constructive criticism after sitting before I left for work. I told her how she is on the zafu is exactly how she is.
Hugs, kisses, and tea to go.
Back to listening to Ajan Bram on the morning drive to work.
Today I have to reconcile my consolidated memorandum of receipt with the supply section. It is kind of a sore spot for me. Time for work practice.
I may try and do a book review during lunch break.

Zen is Stupid
The premise of the podcast was that if you weren’t doing meditation you weren’t “Zen.”
Patrick told the listeners to sit for 20 minutes while he and Gwen chatted in the background.
Interesting how my comparing, aversive mind went to work on that.
“Nobody is “Zen” it is an action!”
“Listen idiots, I do more sitting before 0600 than most people do in a day.”
Why the F#(% are you talking while people are supposed to be meditating”
Anger
Aversion
Spiritual Pride & Superiority
OK it only took a little bit before I laughed at myself but the initial reaction tells me I still have a lot of work to do.
Oh, and this is supposed to show up in my blogroll MonkMojo's 1000 Cuts but doesn't seem to want to play. If your not following Monk Mojo, your missing out!

ZaZen Report 98662
At some point during last nights sitting The PoC came into the area to yell at ZMH “HANNAH, YOU GOT TO CHANGE YOUR PANTS, YOU’RE KUSAI!” (kusai=stinky) ZMH addressed the PoC “We’re doing ZaZen Now, after.”
After ZaZen I read the first chapter of “A Pebble For Your Pocket” by TNH to anyone who would listen before going to bed.
In the morning ZMH and her mother joined me for the first sitting then breakfast. ZMH was not sure if she wanted to do another sitting but she would do lap sitting instead so I was her zafu for the next half hour. Bell, warm up the car, grab some tea for the road, Ajahn Bram again on the podcast, I like his talks. I think the family fever and virus has finally affected me as I feel a little week this morning. Should get my inspection results in a bit to see how I did.

98662 ZaZen with the cat.
No magical powers of better blood circulation to the legs when sitting full lotus, although I did go straight to the numb foot without the usual Pins and needles warning. That was different.
Whole family seems to be down with the flu. Boo.
So it was just the cat and I for sitting this morning.
Although I did feed him prior to sitting down I suppose he was feeling neglected.
He even came back for the second sitting after tea and breakfast.
The sitting area has been moved from the office to the living room so as to have room for all the cushions. Now if I can only convince the wife to get rid of the TV/entertainment canter and couch…
Supposed to be getting a functional area inspection at work today... Joy!

98662 ZaZen till you puke!
Some coughing from the other room, but only the cat sitting with me.
Three minuets till two bells there was a presence over my left shoulder.
Like that feeling you may get when you know there is a monk behind you with a big stick. Thwack!”DAH~DY, YOU NEED TO GIVE ME THE COLD MEH~DE~SIN!”
The Princess of Chaos (PoC) was up and angry. Bows to the wall, Zafu, Buddha, and to the PoC; appropriate time for breakfast anyway.
So We go to the kitchen, Raisin bran for breakfast. We eat quietly after the five reflections. I finish first and observe the PoC eating only the bran flakes and avoiding the raisins. You should eat the raisins sweetheart. “I don like it raisins.” Try? “Un Uh”
Would you like daddy to feed you? “Uh Hu” Close your eyes and open your mouth….
Was that good? “Uh huuuu” see; raisins are good! (smiles) Breakfast complete and back to the Zafu, the PoC wakes up her big sister “HANNAH, YOU HAVE TO GET UP FOR ZAZEN!” hmm, subtle. Sleepy eyed six year old takes her place on the Zafu beside me. The PoC on a butterfly pillow. Bells and bows. 20 minuets in they get up, Hannah says “I’m Done” and the PoC gets up too, both with the appropriate bows. The kindergartner goes back to bed, The PoC goes to the bathroom to vomit. I thought she had been really still during this morning sitting…Guess the raisins weren’t that good after all.. Mom is up to the rescue, than sits till the bell. Bows, kisses hugs, a pot of tea to go. Ajan Bram on the podcast today. Nice comments on the blog. Work!

ZaZen Report 98662
This morning I woke the kids and they were pretty excited to sit. I tried to wake their mother but she seemed to be enjoying a good dream. Oh well; maybe next time.
This morning’s sitting had quite a bit of horse play, and though I tried to just let it be, I opted to skip breakfast and have another sit instead.
I am still thinking about another set of cushions.

ZaZen with the Princess of Chaos (Updated)
This morning I hit the snooze button once, though about hitting it again but did not. I did not sleep so well due to some coughing caused by post nasal drip. I went to Hannah’s room and lightly touched her shoulder and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She woke with a start and exclaimed “Daddy! You were supposed to wake me up for ZaZen!” I guess she thought I was giving her a by by kiss. I said “I know… It’s time.”
As I was putting on my rakusa she said “Oh I have to go get Iris, she wants to ZaZen too.” “Really” I said, quite doubtful.
Aside: Iris is the kind of kid they model children’s shows like Franklin or little Bill after. The stubborn, selfish , angry, shy, uninformed, etc etc, example that we learn life lessons from. Hey, she’s four, and yes she has probably been a bit spoiled. It just can’t be helped, she’s Iris after all and she casts a spell on people to somehow get her way.
“She really want to ZaZen with us” Hannah said as she left to get her. As I light the incense I hear “HANNAH! I CAN’T OPEN MY EYES!!!” But apparently she could because she came rushing in following Hannah a few seconds later. We arranged a blanket for a mat and got a pillow for a cushion, but she really wanted a Zafu and Zabuton. I suppose I should have given her mine.
Three bells, Hannah shows her how to place her hands in the cosmic Mudra; again and again and again. Hannah is fussing over Iris, telling her what to do, finally I say to her “Hannah. Don’t worry about Iris’s ZaZen, just concentrate on your own.” That seems to do the trick. In my peripheral vision I see Iris wobbling from side to side, holding up her hands to admire at her mudra. Finally she settles. They get up ant 22 minuets in and start fussing over breakfast. Little kids taking care of them selves while daddy sits and mommy snores away. When the bell rings I get up and they are getting ready to make waffles for me, I tell them I’m sorry I don’t have time this morning since I got up late. They are OK with that. I rush to get the trash and recycling out to the street, warm up the car, make a pot of tea to go. Took my vitamins, hugs kisses, thanks for joining me this morning for ZaZen.
On the way into work I play a recorded Dharma talk, but I am not listening to it. Nice thoughts of these little kids joining me for practice turn to poison as my discriminating aversive mind churns out “Why doesn’t she (my wife) sit with me?” Comparing mind says “The kids do it without even being asked! And they even want to! Why doesn’t she?” Recognizing these thoughts as poison I want to stop. I tell myself “she has to work out her own salvation too.” The argument goes on in my head, yes but her suffering affects us all. Blah blah blah the poisonous thoughts churn about. No, only when you allow it to, Stop! Loving Kindness. Loving Kindness. Loving Kindness. Loving Kindness. Loving Kindness.
All the evil thoughts conceived by me by way of my own ancient greed anger and delusion I now fully avow.
Walking down the hall at work this morning I notice my hands are in the walking meditation form.
I wonder if I should get another set of cushions.
Update: Today's Horrorscope:
You aren't sure about this "everything is beautiful" idea that keeps floating around today. Although this might be an effective mantra, you still could lose your perspective. Don't waste any of your precious energy now by worrying about everything that's left to finish. Just stay focused without judgment. In a few days, you should be able to look back and see things in a better light.

Danger!
One of the big ones is what I call, being all in my head. I am sure someone somewhere has come up with a more eloquent way of expressing it, but I am not always so able to be eloquent.
What I mean by this is I think pretty straight forward. We get caught up in the reality of our philosophical theory and can come up with some pretty lofty ideas that sound great!
But they just totally fall apart in practice.
The theory of “No-Self” comes to mind pretty heavily on this, and a lot of wonderful people have gone on and on about No-self. But theory doses not make a law. Practical application is the best way to test a theory. Go out side and find a large rock and drop it on your bare foot, but be careful not to damage your “Non-Self” too badly. That hurts doesn’t it? If there is “No-self” than tell me what it is that is hurting? Ah! There is a self.
Now, pay attention to the pain. From the first moment the pain starts follow it. The pain arises and passes away. That “Self” that existed when that pain began though the time when the pain subsides is also arising and passing away moment to moment and there is only an impression remaining.
Conclusion, there is a self when the self arises, and no-self when it passes away. With a note that this arising and passing away is happening so quickly that to say there is one or the other is impractical.
Now, please stop dropping rocks on your foot. That is just silly behavior.

Retreat Epic Fail/Victory!

Ok I just finished off my Rohatsu retreat, a week late. Sitting at home following along with Jundo’s totally contrived Zen show. I will follow up on comments and stuff I got while I was in retreat later; I just wanted to get this stuff out while it was semi-fresh and stinking like the turd that it is.
On to the failure and success of the retreat! Ok, I prepared the family Friday night by saying I am doing a retreat this weekend, there are work periods, so I’ll help out around the house during that time.” Then I sat until a little after 0140. (After I had been up since 0430 Friday, I had also run a PFT and was a bit sore) When I got up Saturday I went straight to the cushion, did my “samu” and did night sitting” again till about 0240 again, Sunday more of the same until about 30 minutes before the next eating/ working period. I had become hell. Mara was whispering in my ear telling me how totally cool and zen I was and it was sounding pretty sweet. And my “dakini”, Megumi was the catalyst for Mara to call victory over me. The wife was pissed since my folks are coming and she is uneasy about them coming and wants to make them as comfortable as we can when they come up from Texas. I was busy being a ZaZen God and did not want to be cheated out of my ZaZen. There was a large uncontrolled explosion of emotion resulting in tears, and a house full of pissed off women. Total train wreck. Wow, what a dick.
All the evil karma ever committed by me since of old,
On account of greed, anger, and folly, which have no beginning,
Born of my body, mouth, and thought - I now make full open confession of it.

I got better though, and so did they.. Had a great talk about a lot of the stuff that had bubbled up, got up, and started working on the house in an extended samu period. Ate dinner with the family and finished the sitting with equanimity restored. And as a bonus I think the next time I say I want to “Go” to a retreat the family might not be as resistant to me leaving the house for a weekend retreat in future.
Oh, and the retreat must have been good, because Jesus is following Me now!
His Bio says " A lot more like Buddha thank you thought. Wish more people today understood my message. We are all One."
My knee hurts.
May you be well and happy,
Jordan

Here I come to wreck the day!
Growing up in the Marine Corps the top three things you want to make sure are straight with your Marines in garrison are Time off, chow, and chiefly, pay!
I blurted out to her, “try to approach the task with love and kindness in your heart.”
That has got to be a strange thing to hear from a crusty old Staff Sergeant.
I talked about the cause of the incident that was causing her stress likely being ignorance, and that I was sure the Reservists simply did not know what to do and were doing the best they could under the given circumstances, and that it would serve everyone better if she approached the matter from a different point of view, that being “I am here to help you get paid, I am here for you”
She smiled, appeared noticeably more at ease, and said thank you Staff Sergeant, and went on her way.
I hope I can keep that same positive and productive attitude for the rest of the day.
Be well and happy,
Jordan

Morning Bliss
This morning the second bell must have been loud enough to wake up Hannah.
She got up while I was eating some cereal and drinking some tea and said something in a mixture of Japanese and English and sleep speak. I had to ask her to repeat it several times and then to say it in English. She sounded a little frustrated by the fourth time.
She said “Daddy, before you leave make sure you give be a good by kiss.” Then she went back to bed.
That is a pretty nice way to start off the morning.
I did. She smiled.
I had some thoughts on confusion/chaos that I thought would be great to blog about. But the moment is gone now and I had to go to a staff meeting so my thoughts on it are not so clear anymore. Gone back to chaos I suppose. But anyway I think the gist of the thought cloud was that everything comes from chaos or some such mental blather. I think it kind of made me happy or at least at ease, which might be a better kind of happiness.
During this morning’s second sitting I observed my mind chattering away, and observed my mind observing the chatter, and a thought came up, something like “What are you going on about then? I wasn’t even listening to my own thoughts anymore but they were still going on. I had gone somewhere else altogether, but in recognizing that, it was gone. And I am OK with that.
What if the first noble truth was: life is happiness…

Happy Anniversary USMC

17 years ago today I was standing on some yellow footprints down at MCRD San Diego getting yelled at by some psychopath in a funny hat. I am going to have to get a new job soon. Boo!
On that day DoD 4160.21-M-1, "Defense Demilitarization Manual" was also
published.
This article was in time Magazine
Monthly Basic pay for a Private in the Marines was 753.90 before FICA, Social Security, MGIB, and medicare got taken out. You ended up with about 400.00 after all that.
Funny thing is, when I first enlisted, I did not even know we got paid!

Tea party

Friday evening I had the unique opportunity to enjoy the company of Margie and her students for tea.
Tea ceremony is an experience. I find my self at a loss of words to accurately describe it, but I will try.
First off everything has its place. There is nothing extra. There is a strict adherence to form, but only to be able to appreciate emptiness. Ok, there was one thing I am not sure about, what is up with the unused hand fan? I suppose it was used to mark your place/ announce your entrance, but as it was not used as a fan… I bet Margie can help me out with this… then again; maybe there is nothing to understand.
There is of course the primary players, guest and host, who form a symbiotic relationship in the tea ceremony. The whole affair is artfully choreographed in a display of appreciation. And there is a whole array of sensory data to appreciate. If you get a chance to participate or observe this phenomenon do take advantage of it. I do have one warning though be prepared for the inevitable over stimulation hangover. I find staring at a wall helps.
To learn more about the art of tea recommend you visit Margie’s blog If you are in the Portland Oregon area (Mumon & Bruce & Tina, this means you) there will be an open house July, 17, 24, 21 at the Ryokusuido Tea Room at 39th and NE Glisan. In August there will be a two week workshop in how to be a guest at a Japanese tea ceremony. Thursday August 7, 14 or August 21. 28. you can Contact Margie through her blog for more details.
Ok I got the AC plugged in, it is getting to hot outside, algae is blooming in the pond, baby ffish swimming, radish flowers blooming, salt pickles to be made.
Take care,
Jordan

Retreat by alone?
I went to a retreat and nobody showed up!
That is totally fictitious but that is how I felt when I first got to the Portland Buddhist Priory on Sunday morning. Rev. Clarissa quickly explained that the retreat was going at a cabin the monks had rented out by the coast. If I had been paying attention to my e-mails. I would have known that too. Feeling bold, I stayed. Rev. Clarissa was kind enough to let me and seemed happy to have someone holding down the meditation hall. She did do the Morning Office Ceremony (two times) but that was the only interruption during my retreat by alone.
This was the first time I have ever sat this many sittings by myself and as it happens I am actually kind of glad I was able to do the retreat by alone. I was able to get up and stretch out my legs and do kinhin (so called walking meditation) when the time felt right to stretch my legs and was not worried about maintaining a schedule, or waiting for bells to ring or for clappers to clap. I think that those things would be good too but trying out an all day sitting by alone with no extras is really just what I needed.
Nothing special happened either. My backside was terribly sore from sitting by the end of the day along with my right knee, but other than that just nice and boring Zazen.
I do think I am going to try and do a retreat at least once a month now. Even thought it also seems like it is really boring. Maybe that is exactly why it is so important. I don’t really know, but I kind of think that maybe that that boredom is a good thing.
Be well

A new revolution around the Sun

Pigface; I can do no wrong lyrics:
Take a look outside because I'm walking on glass
Thin ice in the future or a voice from the past
Forsaken dreams decaying in the four-way zone
Better look outside because I'm coming alone
Better look outside because I'm coming alone
How many nights before I sang an innocent song
Rejoicing in my ignorance, I could do no wrong
Take a look outside for the first time afraid
A tiny glass was shattered where one time we laid
A tiny glass was shattered where one time we laid
I can do no wrong!
So I trapped my emptiness between lie after lie
Poured myself another and started to cry
Shame on you for weakness go back where you belong
Poured my self another - I could do no wrong
I can do no wrong
I can do no wrong
I can do no wrong
I can do no wrong
I can do no wrong
Ect..
Two revolutions around the sun ago I decided that I would not “pour myself another.” I still manifest the “I can do no wrong” attitude from time to time. But the more I practice the more open I am to knowing nothing.
{Knowing nothing is an interesting endeavor in itself, it is like the bottom falling out of a bucket, WOOUSH!} Even the Idea of I can do no wrong seems arbitrary now. Right and wrong are just dualistic. But there is still wrong and there is still right. Mostly things just are how they are. The interesting thing is that we don’t have to have preconceived ideas of right and wrong, if we just listen we can hear the correct course of action calling to us. There is no reason to pursue anything. It is so interesting when things become clear. I still find myself grasping to hold on to that clarity. Even though I know as soon as I cling to it, it’s gone.
For this revolution around the sun I intend to be credit debt free.
Return to regular shakuhachi practice.
Get in a few more Shakuhachi lessons.
Cling less and let go more.
May the new revolution find you all well and happy

Moving the Stupa (formerly known as the stone)

Friday I had the opportunity to help out Virginia Wolf with her stone Stupa project again. Unfortunately my camera has malfunctioned so the ink painting is all I have to really commemorate the experience. I also did a little blowing meditation there with the flute, which no one told me was awful. I had been thinking a bit about confidence lately after hearing stories of others and thought that my own confidence is rather high. But playing the flute in front of an audience is a good way to put that false sense of confidence in check. As I played I could feel my heart rate increase and I could hear my heart pounding trough the notes. I asked but no one else seemed to notice. Thinking about it, it was a really wonderful experience. Rev. Meiko has asked me to play for the children at the Dharma school. That will be another opportunity to practice in front of an audience. I would like to practice a bit more prior to that since I have been neglecting the Shakuhachi facet of my own overall practice lately.
I remember my first lesson after practicing for two years on my own. The first time I tried to blow a good Ro note for my teacher I could not make a sound at all. He called that the lesson effect. I have come a long way from there but still have a lifetime to go.
May all be well and happy
