Hope and hopelessness & Hope and hopelessness

When I got my orders to Okinawa I was initially thrilled at the idea of meeting up with a Sangha, one that would hopefully be more accessible than the one that I had been with down in Portland.

I had heard stories from veterans that they were introduced to Zazen in Okinawa.
Things change, and a quick google search, followed by some pretty intensive google searching revealed that there just isn't much in the way of Buddhism or Buddhist practice in Okinawa at all.

That is what gave me the "idea" of starting the Okinawa Zazen Group. After all, I have the fancy lobster bib, shave my head and took those vows that made me promise to save all sentient beings.
Since no one else appeared to be stepping up, I felt obliged to.

That, and the increasing popularity of Buddhism in the west, There being a pretty large number of westerners around here, and meeting three people who professed to be Buddhists "Too" in my own unit. It seemed like the thing to do.

Today, after kinhin, I was joined by the cat. Who decided to use me a a cushion despite there being several available. I sure did appreciate that.

I have asked the wife to ask google about Buddhist groups in Japanese.

I'm pretty hopeless about that turning anything up too.

The Schedule for next week's Saturday morning Zazen Group is as follows:

0930- Introduction and Instructions for sitting and Zen hall etiquette,
1000- Heart Sutra recitation
1005- Zazen
1030- Kinhin
1040- Zazen
1110- If you show up, we'll talk about practice. If you don't show up, I'll probably write another blog post.

You should know that even if all the buddhas in the ten directions, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, together engage the full power of their buddha wisdom, they could never reach the limit, or measure or comprehend the virtue, of one person's zazen.

A LITTLE BLOG POST

Light three joss sticks.
Plant them in the sand one at a time.
Homage to the Buddha
Homage to the Dharma
Homage to the sangha.

Palms together, Bow.

Bow to the little round cushion, again with palms together.
Kids are already sitting.
Sit, start the timer.
Three bells. Bow.

The smallest one gets up and starts hopping around.

Stands behind her sister and does an about face, farts loudly and hops away bouncing about the house.

The bigger one voices her dissatisfaction with the little ones actions.

“Just sit.”

“Daddy can I have a Zazen dako?

“Not yet. “

The little one is still bounding around the house.

“Daddy, Just five minuets left, can I have a Zazen Dako Now?”

“OK”

Two bells, the small one rushes to her cushion and sits.

Bows together.

“Thank you girls for sitting with me.”

“Can we watch TV now?”

“OK.”

A simple melody on the flute.

Watch the fish swim in the pond.

An e-mail to Mom.

a little blog post.

DAY OFF IS NOT A DAY OFF AND ZAZEN 98662

Gosh I got a day off today and seems like it has all ready pretty much been planned out for me by the wife.

The whole family got up for sitting this morning which was nice  Until ZMI decided it would be better to get up and start kicking a playground ball around the house.  Still I was able to be pretty still throughout that.  ZMH was having a hard time though since her mother cranked up the heat and her zafu is closest to the heater, she was getting too hot and her complaining mind got the better of her.

Got to start working on the honeydo list.  I might get a chance to start cutting some material for a Kesa today... Guess I'll se how that works out.

ZAZEN & WATERWORKS 98662

At dinner last evening it was discovered by ZMH that I would be going out of town for a few days. She was really concerned about me coming back... I said something pretty unskillful. I told her that if I didn't that she would get a allot of money! Which while it is true was not exactly right speech. And thus began the waterworks... The wife bailed me out by predicting the future and telling her not to worrie and that I would come back. I have a problem in that I have difficulty saying things like that because I don't know. Speeking of "Don't know" Barry has a nice post about this over on his Oxhearding Blog. Take a second to check it out. I'll wait.

The family sat together last night, but once again only ZMH got up for the morning sitting. The bells for ending my first sitting seem to be her cue to wake up now so we ate breakfast together again. She was really good sitting this morning. She did want lap zen but somehow I dissuaded her. This morning sittings had the qualities of those funky blissful sittings that were just calm and serene. That was nice but I have learned not to expect them anymore.

I am feeling really good today. Maybe it is from listening to Ajan Bram again on the way in.

Just a quick session on the elliptical machine before hitting the shower today. Got a lot to work on before the weekend.

Oh, and I found that this is hilarious!

LIES & ZAZEN 98662

Last night Was busy. Got off work in time to rush home, than rush to a PTA meeting, than rush ZMH to her Karate class. Then get home, take a look at the computer for a few than evening office. Good news is everyone joined in for at least a couple of minutes for the evening sitting. Bad news is my wife is still suffering from a sinus infection that she refuses to go to the hospital for. I would like to ask all the readers here to encourage her to get treatment and or if she refused to get treatment quit bothering the rest of the family about how her sinuses hurt. You can e-mail her at megumif(at)gmail.com. Thanks!

This morning I found I was really grateful for sitting the first sitting by alone. ZMH woke up and had a waffle before the second sitting and it seemed to have disastrous effects. She was sliding off her Zafu (slick pajamas) complaining about this and that and asking an apparent never ending stream of questions. Finally, out of desperation, I told a LIE!!!
I told her the most the most important thing was to be upright, still, and silent. It seemed to actually have some effect so hopefully I will have a chance to explain what the most important thing is properly one day. I don't think she is really ready for that talk yet anyway with her "why mind." Then again maybe it is the perfect time.

Listened to a SFZC podcast and a half on the drive in to work. Has anyone else noticed that they seem to have integrated allot of nontraditional stuff into whatever it is they do?
I am not saying it is good or bad, but it is often quite different.

Got more to say but no time to say it. Boo!

ZAZEN & POND MAINTENANCE 98662

It was really pleasant to come home before 2000 last night. My copy of the record of Laymen Pang arrived too. (Thanks for the hint on that Yamakoa.)
I got a chance to fire up the grill and cook some short ribs... Yummy!

After dinner the weather was so nice I decided it would be a good chance to catch up on the pond. The kids (and I) would really like to be able to see the fishies swimming around in there. But the blue dye I put in there to deter airborne predators is preventing that at the moment. We did see a couple as they came towards the top and nibbled at some algae. I did do a 10% water change and also switched out the filter. I did not rinse the bio balls off since I think that you are supposed to leave all that stinky stuff on there... Still can't see the fish unless they are swimming towards the top though. Boo!

Everyone sat together for evening office, ZMI even joined me in doing prostrations. She is a quick study. Read some more TNH to the kids before going to sleep.

Morning office I conducted alone as usual and ate breakfast then woke ZMH for the second sitting. ZMI and the mom decided to sleep in this morning. ZMH was having some trouble staining awake and the last five or so minutes of sitting ended up as lap zen. Always nice to get a blast of loving kindness in the morning.

Listening to Alan Watts podcasts on the way to work. I know he gets a bad rap from some folks, but he was certainly an effective speaker.

Arriving at work I hit the gym for the first time since I got sick, it is good to be back. I am getting close to the bubble on weight so it might be time to start stepping it up a notch. (I know, I know, crossfit... sorry but I don't think that is gonna happen for me.)

Anyway I got to go count stuff and document the counting of stuff. Joy!

From which we're wakened by a friendly nudge

Morning Bliss

This morning the second bell must have been loud enough to wake up Hannah.
She got up while I was eating some cereal and drinking some tea and said something in a mixture of Japanese and English and sleep speak. I had to ask her to repeat it several times and then to say it in English. She sounded a little frustrated by the fourth time.
She said “Daddy, before you leave make sure you give be a good by kiss.” Then she went back to bed.

That is a pretty nice way to start off the morning.

I did. She smiled.

I had some thoughts on confusion/chaos that I thought would be great to blog about. But the moment is gone now and I had to go to a staff meeting so my thoughts on it are not so clear anymore. Gone back to chaos I suppose. But anyway I think the gist of the thought cloud was that everything comes from chaos or some such mental blather. I think it kind of made me happy or at least at ease, which might be a better kind of happiness.

During this morning’s second sitting I observed my mind chattering away, and observed my mind observing the chatter, and a thought came up, something like “What are you going on about then? I wasn’t even listening to my own thoughts anymore but they were still going on. I had gone somewhere else altogether, but in recognizing that, it was gone. And I am OK with that.

What if the first noble truth was: life is happiness…

Brain Dump [updated]

Warning:
The following post is just what has been bubbling up in my brain housing group lately.

Kaaah!

OK. I have too much on my mind right now. I am hoping a journal post will help me sort through it.

School:
Just finished up COM 140 and GEN 105 last week. My final grade has posted for COM 140 as an A-. It has not posted for GEN 105 yet but I expect about the same. [update: I did indeed get an A- in Gen 105]

I am aware through the process of going through school that I am consistently underestimating myself. I find I get into the end-gaining mindset which at least for me is counter productive. What I mean by that is that if I over think an assignment and cause myself stress because of it, the work turns out to be of lower quality. However; if I just throw some stuff out there that hits the wickets of what the assignment is asking for, I do well.

Next round of classes starts in October. The classes are Critical thinking and Effective Essay writing.
My wife says I am already too critical.

Money:
I signed what will likely be my last contract with Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children. I received a bonus for the first time in my 17 years of service. It was not huge, but combine with the sale of 30 vacation days it was enough to eliminate my entire credit card debit and allow for a little frivolous spending that felt needed. I am still concerned that we are not living within our means. There are a lot of services we pay for that we could be without but don't want to: Cable, Netflix, the wife’s gym membership, Cell Phones and I am probably leaving out something but you get the point.
We are also making plans to do some maintenance on the house. Some will be contracted, a lot we will try and do ourselves and hire a contractor to fix if we screw it up too much. If I knew I was staying here this would not be much of a concern but with the end of my Career eminent, I am going to have to eek out employment somewhere, and it will most likely not be here, so I will have to sell this house in a tough market. I really do like it here, so if anyone in the Vancouver USA area needs to pay someone 70K (That’s a lot more than I make right now, but I need the raise, and that is around what my civilian counterpart's start off at) a year to keep their stuff locked up three years from now, let me know, I’m your man.

There is so much interconnected to the money issue that I can not really fathom it in its entirety. I just try to tackle little bits and pieces as I am able to.

I realize also that according to recent polling efforts I saw in a magazine somewhere (Tricycle?) I am in the minority of Buddhists in America being that I do not fall into the upper middle class and up tax bracket. Yes my dear readers; I am so poor that I get more back in taxes than I pay in, sorry for being a burden on all you rich folks.

Guru(s):
Since I upgraded my ipod from a first gen 1 gig Nano (See Bonus above, I got an iphone, that is way too excessive [and expensive] for me, but I love it) I have started listening to a lot of podcasts. One that I have been enjoying is “the 12 step Buddhist” but something he said has been sticking like a plank in my eye and I was having difficulty seeing past it. The offending sound byte was “I need a Guru.” I think I threw up a little in the back of my throat when I heard that. (Be advised, context omitted.)

Now, when I have such an adverse reaction to something I feel it is important to do some introspection on the subject. The idea of a guru is one that gets pretty lambasted here on the interwebs and with some good reasons. People get taken advantage of by so called spiritual experts and they should be scrutinized. On the other hand there are some things in that same realm (and what I think the 12 step Buddhist was referring to) that are really, really worthwhile. The first is fellowship. In buddhisty language you might refer to this as a sangha. Although this is also referred to as a community, for my purposes I think fellowship is at the heart of the mater. I have been a part of a few “Sangha” both physical and on the net but there is a few things that keep them from being satisfactory. For the physical Sangha, I barely get to go because of distance and there are also some minor (meaning I can live with the differences) internal policy issues that I am not comfortable with. On the net, while I think it is a great supplement and works fine in a pinch, there is the element of sitting with a real person that is notably missing.

The other thing is mentoring. I am fine with the idea of mentoring. Even though it might just in reality be a different way of “Feeling” about a guru. I have been mentoring Marines since ancient times or at least since I was a young Corporal and put into a leadership position fifteen some years ago. I’m salty. In the Marines being salty can sometimes mean you have been around for a while and nobody can tell you Sh*t. So this; coupled with the number of frauds out there, could be another place where my resistance to a “Guru” could be coming from.

So, in conclusion, I guess I should say that I have been practicing Buddhism for just one small moment and that if I can learn from a child of three, I will honor that teaching, and if I can teach to a 70 year old, I will honor that teaching. Meanwhile, if you’re a Buddhist or interested in Buddhism in or around the 98662 zip code and feel the need, like I do, for fellowship, please come by for tea sometime.

Tea:
My wife and I are blessed with some good friends that are kind enough to drop off little gifts of Sencha tea from time to time. My senses have become pretty involved with Sencha tea. I have discovered that I can tell that some teas labeled Sencha are not always the same as others. The current Tea I have at the house has a different taste than the tea I have at the office. When I first drank it I probably made a bad face. The company that made it, in an effort to preserve the tea, put something in their tea to make it “fresh” longer. This affects the taste. I have found that some teas are best brewed with water around 140 degrees. Teas that have had some additives can be made more palatable by using water that is around 195 degrees. Anyway, thank you for the tea! I am grateful!

Rakusu: I am about to start sewing a new Rakusu (Mini Buddist Robe) as part of the ongoing online “Jukai” (Buddhist ordination, maybe a bit like being baptized in xtian circles) classes over at the Treeleaf Sangha.
I have no Idea what I am doing when it comes to sewing. So far all I have done is gotten some material (a dark saffron reddish color) I am going to have to try and work on it, without expectation or a goal in mind. This will be an interesting addition to my practice.

Flute: Ack, I have not been playing much lately. Can someone add a few hours to the day please? Or even better, stop by and ask me to play.

Oh, I got so much work to do, maybe now I can get back at it.

Be well, and happy!

Books, Tea, and an interesting conversation.

There is already a book review out for Ted’s The Flatbed Sutra of Louie Wing.

I was promised a free copy which hasn’t arrived yet. If and when I do get it I promise my review will be much shorter and not nearly as in depth as the one linked above.

Margie is inviting people for tea, if you’re in the Portland, Oregon or Vancouver, Washington area, go check it out.

And some guy wrote a nice post about a conversation he had, which I found interesting.

In other news, my Tuition Assistance Authorization came back approved. A couple of must take classes, COM 140, and GEN 105.

Not Pontificating…for the moment.

I feel a certain peace of mind. I am not sure how to articulate it. I have done a lot of pontificating on this blog and I am sure some of you have come here for that. I am sorry I just don’t really feel up to it for now.

I would like to encourage everyone reading this blog to sit Zen twice a day.
As Gudo Nishijima says: “ I feel it has made me a little better than before.”

I will continue posting stuff, which may or may not be Zen related. I am in the mood to work on my practice with the end blown flute more. So I will.

May all be well and happy,

Karma, Cause, and Effect re-revisited

The other day a friend had brought up that old dilemma about predetermination regarding cause and effect.
I have been trying come up with my own words to express it and up until a few moments ago I did not know how so I fed him some of the stuff I had found in my research on the web and an answer I had received from Nishijima Roshi on the same subject.

But a few moments ago I had a bit of an epiphany.

To explain, for those who have not been following along, I want to first say that Karma is just a foreign word for action. It might be helpful to just drop the idea of karma all together. Put it out of your head.

Now we have Action, Cause and Effect. But it is out of order!
It should be Cause, Action and Effect!!!

You see the cause is everything that brought you here to this present moment. That’s it. Nothing mystical about it at all. Stuff happens. So we could say that the cause is just the past that led you to this present moment. Now here is the Important Question… In this present moment are things predetermined? Well yes and no. You see, because Iris is not sleeping when she should be it had the effect of me being awake. Because I was awake I was pondering a thought loop, which brings me to the present moment of typing away at this blog. Sound predetermined? Maybe so when it is written. But while I am typing this now I could have just rolled over and went to sleep. In the present moment anything can happen. Limited by all those causes for sure, but not totally predetermined. For example I find it doubtful that because of this explanation you will begin levitating off of your chair, but you may for just a moment see something the way I do, or not.

So to sum up:
Cause is just because. As in: this happened because… A side note that this can be a real rabbit hole to go down since we can’t always tell the cause.  Because might also be before's cause

Action is the choice you make in the present moment.

Effect is just what happens afterwards, and also the next cause.

I hope someone will find this helpful.

May you be free from suffering.

Re-birth?

I don’t get on e-sangha much but according to multiple threads on the Treeleaf Zendo forum there was much ado about rebirth…

First thing I thought up was: If there is no such thing as birth or death, how can there be re-birth?

For my two bits, I believe that we are born and die each moment. so yes we have a constant cycle of rebirth. But your ego might not recognize it. Even before the “you” that your ego recognizes was ever around the stuff that makes you up was here. And long after anything that could be recognized as you is around (you decompose) the stuff that made you up will still be here and get incorporated into something else.

So yes we are constantly reborn, the you that existed before you read this little tidbit is already dead. Now in this moment you are reborn, woops, your dead again…oh look at that your reborn, ad nausea. But at the same time you were always here, and always will be. Take that Dogma!

What really matters though is Karma, that is your lasting impression on the world. But I have not gotten enough sleep to go into that right now.

May you be well and happy,
Jordan

Be nice to each other! And be sincere!

There have been a few folks out in the blogosphere talking about some subjects near and deer to me, so I put up a couple of Master Dogen’s old talks on the subject below. I feel like a broken record on this but since I see it keep coming up maybe the right thing to do is just rehash it.

Kind Speech & Love words, I feel are really at the heart of Buddhism, Right up there with Zazen*! I know that is a bold statement but here me out. Our main way of interacting with others is through communication, Here it is written, but it could be through speaking or other actions as well. Zazen* is a great practice, but while you may be able to plunge into it and get to the truth about reality, most folks are not ready, willing or able to do that yet. So clearly we should not be adding to suffering by making matters worse by acting superior or speaking down to others, belittling them. Instead try to raise them up if you can, or say nothing if you can’t.

There are exceptions! Sometimes, particularly when someone (like me) is particularly deluded, some harsh words might be in order to get someone to wake the heck up. But great care and compassion should be taken in that effort, because regardless of your intent, what comes around usually goes around.

May all be well and happy,
Jordan

* I acknowledge that others may have other practices that may be different, Zazen dose it for me.

Some other songs

Fugazi,
Long Distance Runner:

The farther I go the less I know
One foot goes in front of the other
It all boils around to not hanging around
To keep moving in front of the gravity
The answer is there the answer is there
but there is not a fixed position
It keeps moving along so I keep coming along
and that's why I'm a long distance runner
and if I stop to catch my breath
I might catch a piece of death
I can't keep your pace if I want to finish this race
My fight's not with it
It's with the gravity
Long distance runner

Down By Law
1944:

somewhere a pen is busy with hate tonight
jaded eyes and cynics bring me down
somewhere a kid is playing his heart out tonight
but he'll get nowhere with the Berkeley in-crowd
well put-downs are so easy
like a novel without a soul
and every executioner wears a hood
when it's time for heads to roll
well they're just like new dictators
trying to tell us what to love
well their opinion they can take and shove
somewhere young rebels will meet up tonight
somewhere skateboarders and straightedgers will unite
they don't need no magazine that's filled with hate and lies
get enough from the world around them
they're young but they are wise
but negativity's easy
you just fire and walk away
and it's the armchair general
who lives to fight another day
well their opinion they can take and shove
if this was 1944, they'd be pointing their guns at you
cause every fascist, left or right, has a fucked-up set of rules
but do they really think the kids are such fools?
Or do they even care?

These were a coupple of songs that resonatd with me when I was listining to the ipod While running on the treadmill this morning. No breakdown required.

May all be well and happy!
